At Vinha Boutique Hotel, Isabela, a member of the Housekeeping team, came across an abandoned kitten in the hotel's garage. Without hesitation, she took responsibility for caring for him, ensuring food, safety, and the veterinary care he needed. Her dedication moved the entire team. What began as an individual gesture turned into a true show of solidarity, with several members of staff coming together to help cover veterinary costs and further care. It was that network of support, born from a single gesture, that gave the small animal a second chance.

At Sublime Comporta, during a cooking experience, Chef Diogo Gonzaga, the hotel's Executive Chef, learned that one of the guests at his table was a beekeeper. The conversation unfolded naturally throughout the experience, and the Chef kept that small detail to himself. The next day, he surprised the guest with a small jar of honey, made by his own grandfather over 30 years ago, kept as a family keepsake. It wasn't just a gift. It was a gesture between two crafts that met in a shared respect for the land and for time. The guest loved the surprise, taking with him, along with the honey, the memory of an unexpected connection.

In the reservations department at Six Senses Douro Valley, Juliana, a Reservations Sales Executive, shared an experience that demonstrates the true impact of empathy in hospitality. A few years ago, upon receiving a cancellation request due to a guest’s wife being diagnosed with cancer, Juliana responded with extraordinary warmth. Understanding that health came before any stay, she reassured the guest that the hotel’s doors would always be open when the time came to celebrate her victory over the illness. Her comforting words remained close to the couple’s hearts for years. Three years later, as fate would have it, Juliana herself received a new email from the very same guest. The message brought the best news possible: his wife was fully recovered, and they were returning to fulfill their promise of celebrating that great victory. Paying meticulous attention to every detail of their reservation, Juliana looked forward to their arrival, and their meeting, marked by heartfelt hugs and deep emotion at both check-in and check-out, sealed a genuine human connection they will never forget. We believe it is these gestures of profound empathy that create lasting memories and give true meaning to the concept of hospitality.

At Casa da Calçada, in Amarante, two members of the team remind us that kindness often lives in the smallest gestures.
Every Christmas, Margarida Silva, the Front Office Manager, calls the hotel's longtime guests to wish them a happy holiday season. One year, after several unanswered calls to a guest she couldn't reach, she called his wife instead. That's when she learned he had passed away. The wife was genuinely moved to know some people still remembered her husband and cared enough to make that call.
This wasn't the only time care made a difference at Casa da Calçada.
Months later, at a wedding at the hotel, Teresa Oliveira, Rooms Division Manager, crossed paths with a woman in a navy-blue gown she didn't recognize, and stopped to tell her how beautiful she looked. The woman turned out to be the groom's mother, quietly overwhelmed with nerves. She confessed to Teresa that her son's happiness was her greatest wish, and that she had been so anxious about the moment ahead. Teresa's words made the moment a little lighter to carry.

At MS Collection Aveiro, concierge Inês Oliveira once noticed the distress of an American couple facing a major travel setback. Near the end of their vacation in Portugal, they needed to return to Lisbon to catch their flight home, but every train for the day was completely sold out on the CP website, with not a single seat available. Facing the risk of missing their flight or having to endure a long and expensive alternative journey, desperation was starting to set in.
Without hesitation, Inês simply told them: “Come with me… let’s go to the station!” She walked with the couple for about twenty minutes to the train station, reassuring them along the way with her empathy and infectious optimism. Once at the station, she went straight to the ticket counter and pulled off the impossible: first-class tickets on the 5:15 PM Alfa Pendular train, complete with an unexpected discount. On top of that, Inês refused any tip, believing she was simply doing her job, and even provided the guests with water and snacks to ensure their return journey was as comfortable as possible.
It was a gesture of extraordinary dedication that transformed a moment of deep anxiety into one of the most memorable and rewarding highlights of the couple’s entire trip.

At The Reserve, a young guest was arriving to celebrate his 10th birthday, a boy who loved both Harry Potter and astronauts. His parents were returning guests, eager to introduce their son to a place they already loved.
The team treated it as more than another birthday: the pastry team prepared a Harry Potter cake, the suite was decorated with themed balloons, and a custom bedspread was made featuring a spacecraft and stars that glowed in the dark. But the true 'wow' moment came with a knock at the door. Juan, a member of the restaurant team, had dressed as Harry Potter himself to serve the family's welcome drinks.
In that instant, the surprise became real magic, and a birthday became a memory the boy will carry for years to come.

After a family checked out, Saulina, a housekeeper at the Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort in São Miguel, found a young child’s favorite plush.
Instead of simply sending it back, she decided to photograph it in various spots around the property, as if it were enjoying its final moments of vacation.
The photos were sent along with the toy, and days later, the parents sent a thank-you message explaining that their daughter never forgot that thoughtful gesture.

At Pousada de Lisboa - Praça do Comércio, the journey of Sónia Mendonça, currently F&B Manager, is a true story of dedication, resilience, and a passion for the art of hospitality. She has been part of the team since the hotel opened in 2015, and her steady growth reflects her unwavering commitment. Her spirit of selflessness was immortalized on a memorable night in April 2025, when a citywide blackout plunged Lisbon into darkness. With limited transport, severed communications, and a skeleton staff, the night had every reason to turn into chaos. However, even on her day off, Sónia did the impossible to reach the hotel, bringing her daughter along. Upon arrival, she took charge with exemplary calm: collaborating with the chef to design a feasible menu on the spot, reorganizing table service, and ensuring that over a hundred guests enjoyed an unforgettable dinner. What could have been a disastrous experience turned into a magical and comforting moment for everyone present. It was her vision, empathy, and ability to lead through the most challenging moments that created lasting memories and gave true meaning to the concept of hospitality.

Henrique Proença, who was a member of the In-Room Dining team at the time at Vila Vita Parc, once noticed a young guest who loved painting on canvas.
When it came time to pack for their trip to the Algarve, the canvases and paints had been left behind, leaving him deeply disappointed.
During his free time, Henrique went to a stationery store, bought new supplies, and left them as a surprise during the evening turn-down service.

Some years ago, at Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden, an Italian couple checked in with their two-year-old daughter. During their journey through the Azores, the little girl had lost her beloved teddy bear, a treasured travel companion whose absence had left her terribly sad. When Christelle, the General Manager, heard what had happened, she decided to find the little girl a new friend. She went out and bought a small teddy bear, hoping to bring back a little of the happiness lost along the way. The moment she handed it over, the girl wrapped her arms around her new companion and wouldn't let go. A simple, spontaneous gesture that turned a little sadness into a beautiful new memory.
